Fertility treatment is not only a physical process. Appointments, waiting for results and uncertainty about the future can all take an emotional toll. Looking after your wellbeing is an important part of your care.
Acknowledge how you feel
Hope, anxiety, frustration and grief can all appear, sometimes on the same day. These feelings are normal. Naming them, to yourself or to someone you trust, can make them easier to carry.
Share the load
If you have a partner, talk openly about how each of you is coping; people often process things differently. Decide together who you would like to tell about your treatment, and how much you want to share.
Build small routines
- Keep a simple calendar for appointments and medication
- Plan something enjoyable for the days after key appointments
- Gentle movement, regular meals and good sleep all help
- Set limits on searching online, especially late at night
Ask for support
Many people find it helpful to speak with a counsellor who understands fertility treatment, or to join a support group. Ask your care team about the support available to you.
Taking care of yourself is not a distraction from treatment. It is part of it.
Be kind to yourself
There is no “right” way to feel during fertility treatment. Give yourself permission to rest, to step back when you need to, and to celebrate small milestones along the way.
