Your First Fertility Consultation: What to Expect

Booking a first fertility consultation is a big step, and it is natural to feel a mix of hope and nervousness. Knowing what will happen can help you feel more prepared and get more from the appointment.

Before your appointment

You may be asked to complete a health questionnaire and share any previous test results or medical records. If you have a partner, it is usually helpful for both of you to attend, as fertility involves both people.

What to bring

  • Previous fertility test results, scans or treatment summaries
  • A list of current medications and supplements
  • Notes on your menstrual cycle, if relevant
  • Your questions, written down

During the consultation

Your specialist will talk with you about your goals, how long you have been trying to conceive, your medical and family history, and your lifestyle. This is a conversation, not an exam, and you can share as much as you feel comfortable with.

Depending on your situation, the specialist may recommend tests such as blood tests, an ultrasound scan or a semen analysis. Some of these can occasionally be done on the same day.

After the consultation

Once test results are available, you will meet again to discuss what they mean and which options may be suitable. You should leave with a clear understanding of the next steps and enough time to make decisions that feel right for you.

You don’t have to have every answer before you reach out. A first consultation is about understanding your options.

Making the most of your time

Ask the specialist to explain unfamiliar terms, take notes, and do not be afraid to ask the same question twice. A good care team will make sure you feel informed and supported.
